How To Develop Self-Regulation Strategies

How to develop self-regulation strategies.  Developing self regulation strategies is an important part of developing good executive function skills. These are utilized by productive students and fall into three general categories. These are personal, behavioral, and environmental. 

Personal self regulation skills are relating to how a student organizes and interprets information. These have four general categories. The first one is organizing and transcribing information. A student can do this by outlining material learned, summarizing, and highlighting important information. This category also includes several common study strategies such as flash cards and creating a web or map to connect information. This is important for a student to understand what is being taught to them. The second part of personal self regulation is goal setting and planning. This includes time management and completing assignments in the given time. The third aspect is record keeping and self monitoring. This includes keeping a list of common errors that a student makes as well as a record of grades. This will help the student stay on track and the list of errors will help the student not make the same mistakes in future assessments.The last personal self regulation strategy is rehearsing and memorizing. This can be written or oral. This includes mnemonic devices, simple images, and repetition. This will help the student retain the information that they just learned. This also includes teaching the material to someone else, which is a great way to make sure students know the information on the highest level.

The behavioral portion of self regulation includes actions that the student takes. These take two forms. Self-evaluating and self-reinforcement. Self-evaluating involves the student checking on their progress on their own. This involves analyzing the tasks they are given by asking themselves ‘what does the teacher want from me’. It also includes being attentive and looking over their work and giving themselves feedback. Self-reinforcement involves motivation to do assignments and study. A student should be able to motivate themselves with something pleasant and be able to sustain the delayed gratification of the reward. 

The last part of self regulation is the environmental aspect. This involves seeking assistance from others and manipulating the physical environment to suit their needs. One part of this is seeking information from outside sources such as the library, the internet, or seeking to find clarification in textbooks. Environmental structuring involves minimizing distractions, breaking up study periods into manageable chunks so that the student does not get tired, and selecting a physical setting for studying. Seeking social assistance is the last part. This involves seeking assistance from peers and teachers as well as modeling successful behaviors from them.  

These skills are important for students to develop for school as well as life. If they can regulate themselves they are ready to be successful in the career world.
