5 Ways To Develop Self-Regulation Skills

5 Ways To Develop Self-Regulation Skills.  Students need to be able to regulate themselves for any kind of success in their academic careers. Even though a parent or teacher’s first attempt might not be successful it is important to keep going with teaching these strategies because it takes time to build habits in students. There are five common ways to help instruct students to regulate themselves and become self-motivated students.

The first way is to help the student guide their own beliefs about their learning. This most commonly takes the form of goal setting. It could also help the student be more motivated if they frame their regulation as positive rather than negative. For example, having students think about keeping track of their assignments as: a good way to help manage the class rather than having them think that if they don’t keep track of things they will fail. As the parent it might also help for you to provide them with cues to trigger them to use these strategies, such as checking in on their progress every once in a while.

The second way is to promote reflective dialogue. This takes the form in having the student talk and reflect in their performance. They can also model the teacher’s reflective dialogue by thinking out loud, and then have them practice this. It might also be helpful to have them seek out friends to help them think through difficult situations.

The third thing is to provide feedback. Make sure that a student’s goals are clear and unattainable and make sure the expectations of the student are the same way. Also make sure to phrase the feedback in a way that it is focused on the material rather than the student. This will make them want to correct their learning rather than think it is a problem with them.

Many students are more likely to learn if they can connect their learning to something else. So, linking learning to abstract concepts is helpful, especially if you use things that the learner comes up with themselves. In addition, many tests seek to confuse students with irrelevant information so helping them to build the skills to separate the relevant from irrelevant information will help them learn on their own in the long run.

Lastly, students learn better if they are able to link information to things they already know. For this, focus on connecting learning to a broader context and integrate real life examples of the application of information into learning about the information.

The goal is for the student to be able to regulate their own learning. So helping them develop habits that help them take control of their studies and loving to learn will help them be ready for success in the long run.
