“How To Prevent Students From Cheating” Even the best student can be tempted to cheat when the time and pressure are right. Cheating has existed in one form or another throughout the time since children have gone to school. But with the presentation of computers and smartphones having access to the internet it is easier than ever for students to look up answers and plagiarize essays from Google.
Internet related cheating is growing. And some of the problem is the student’s own knowledge. While most students know that copying others answers during a test is wrong, many students may be unclear of the difference between using their resources and plagiarizing content. This has even led to the rise of websites devoted to writing papers for students. The students will download this essay, usually for free, and turn it in as their own work.
However, there are websites that parents and teachers can use that will screen students work for plagiarized content. There are, however, students who use counter-counter cites that will block these detection tools, but this is less common. Teachers and parents should be honest with their students. Tell them that these cites exist and that are prepared to use them to stop cheating.
Cheating runs rampid, not just in school, but in the world of business leaders and other adult “role models”. But there are a few ways that teachers and parents can encourage honest kids.
The first step is to have an open conversation with the student. Set clear expectations for originality with your students. If their school has an honor code, review it with your student. If the school does not, craft one with your student.
Although many students request help with homework on a regular basis, avoid getting over involved in your student’s homework. A little help with more difficult problems can be beneficial, but homework is designed to let the teachers know what the student can do, not what their parents can do.
Students often push themselves hard to get perfect grades, and many parents encourage this. But lowering the pressure to a reasonable level will reduce the students’ urge to cheat when they feel like they can’t do it on their own.
Although many parents think that their student would never cheat, it is important not to ignore the facts and assume innocence. It is also important not to blame the teacher or the school. Take a step back and look at the situation with clear thinking.
Every student gets the urge to cheat, and it is important to take steps to encourage authentic work and not put so much pressure on your student. This will decrease the urge for them to cheat.
