Self-Monitoring Strategies For Students

Self-Monitoring Strategies For Students. Many students aren’t aware of how their behavior affects others and their own learning. This is where the skill of self monitoring becomes important to a student’s success. These skills can help students of all ages and are necessary for students to function as adults.

There are five general steps that a teacher or parent may use to try to implement self-monitoring behaviors in students.

The teachers or parents will first identify the target behavior. It helps if this behavior is as specific as possible and is clearly defined. Examples of this might be turning in homework assignments on time or taking good notes. These are followed by interventions. While these can target negative behaviors, it might be more successful if positive behaviors are identified. This sets a positive tone. The teachers or parents will have the student monitor, for example, the number of assignments turned in on time. This will help the student recognize the behavior and be rewarded for it.

The second step occurs when the teacher or parent selects a self-monitoring device. This helps the student keep track of their progress. This can take the form of a chart or checklist that shows the student when they have completed the desired behavior.

The third step is selecting a reinforcement or reward when the student completes the desired behavior. Some students that are highly motivated might want to do this on their own. In these cases a check mark or crossing things off of a to do list is enough to motivate the student. But in most cases more intervention on the teacher or parent side is needed. And teachers or parents boost the likelihood of a successful outcome if the student has input in the reward for their hard work.

The fourth step involves discussing and teaching the student to use the system. This is where the teacher or parent and the student discuss potential problems and how to handle them when they might arise. This also increases student engagement in the system which makes the student more likely to follow through.

The last step is the most important. Students need to be independent and the adult input in the self monitoring system should fade as the student gains more control over their own learning. The students ability to monitor and correct themselves without others input is very important.

Appropriate self-monitoring behaviors are key to a student’s success in school and in life. By teaching these strategies a teacher or parent can boost a student’s success and prepare them for life beyond school.
