Intrinsic Motivation Development In Students

“Intrinsic Motivation Development In Students”  Many teachers and parents would agree that motivated students are much easier to teach than ones who are not. But most teachers find that students are motivated only to learn what is on the test rather than for the sake of knowing themselves. This is because, in today’s world, many different factors compete for a student’s attention.

The most effective teacher realizes that most students want to learn, and that the student expects them to foster that motivation from the first day to the last by building a good classroom environment.

Many students believe that good teachers and parents motivate them to do well, and these instructors receive high praise from the student. There are ways that teachers and parents can use to motivate their students to learn.

Good instructors identify the course objectives and communicate this clearly with the students so that they understand where their learning is headed and can define what their success is. Students may not be motivated to succeed if the material is difficult, so helping them break it up into manageable pieces helps them stay motivated. Students who can make personal and large picture connections to the material also stay motivated longer. Finally, if a subject can connect back to the real world and current issues students are more likely to be motivated to learn if it can affect them.

Teaching the material is only half the battle of motivating students. Teachers and parents should get to know their students, especially on their prior knowledge and skills in the classroom. Students are more likely to stay motivated if they have a comfortable and interesting learning environment. Setting goals is a great way to motivate students. By setting realistic but still challenging goals, students can be motivated to challenge themselves. Students should work together in a cooperative and open learning environment. Students cooperating with each other is a great way to foster critical thinking skills.

Students should also receive and provide feedback. Students should receive constructive and frequent feedback that is tied to effort. Teachers might increase the probability of success by dropping the lowest test score or provide review sessions and study guides. Students should take advantage of that. Many teachers use an objective grading scale because punishing students through grades reduces intrinsic motivation. Students should be aware of how this works. Teachers may also allow students to have choices on their class projects or homework. This provides the student with a sense of autonomy over their learning.
