Sleep or Study? Achieve Better Grades By Getting More Sleep. As students progress through their educational career, they tend to sleep less. A study conducted by the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA) gathers high school participants and has them log how many hours they sleep and whether or not they had academic problems, these include problems paying attention in school or doing poorly on a test or quiz. The study finds that students who sleep less have problems understanding what is being presented by the teacher in class. They also do badly on assessments, such as quizzes and tests. Essentially, students staying up late to study or complete an assignment contributes to the low scores that the students were trying to avoid in the first place.
Sleep decreases by an average of 41 minutes over the course of high school, but students who get the recommended amount of sleep report academic problems less often than their counterparts that study more and sleep less. Sleeping more also works in conjunction with the natural progression of student’s understanding throughout high school. For example, students in the previously mentioned study in ninth and tenth grade who got the recommended amount of sleep reported only one major academic problem every three days. This number decreased to one every five days by the time they got to senior year. Essentially, the regular sleep cycle helps learning and understanding develop over the course of high school.
The National Sleep Foundation recommends eight to nine hours of sleep a night for teens, but most studies show that students are rarely getting that much. While students should not study less, late night cramming has been proven to not be effective for achieving higher grades. Students should instead focus on good time management skills and anticipate the week’s work in order to not be forced to sacrifice sleep for assignment completion.
