Effective Goal Setting For Students

Effective Goal Setting For Students.  Goals are important for student’s learning. It is what drives and motivates them. However, many students abandon their goals along the way. This is because goals are often not properly set. Effectively setting goals will motivate students to do better and work harder.

The first step in goal setting is to make sure the student believes in their ability to achieve the goal. If they have doubts then they are likely to get discouraged and abandon their goals. If they are feeling down, have them look at their past successes. That began as a goal in their head.

Students should write down their goals. This step is critical. The simple act of writing them down helps set the student as the creator and having them where the student can see them every day will help motivate the student to keep them.

Goals need to be specific. If they are too vague then they will be easily skipped over or forgotten. Goals need to have specific dates in mind as well as a plan to achieve them.

Goals must be measurable. This is so that a student knows when they have succeeded in achieving their goal and have a way to measure their progress. This step also involves breaking the goal down into smaller steps that are more easily measured.

While it is important to set high aspirations, students should also reflect on their lifestyle and see if a goal is actually applicable to them. If they set goals that are unattainable, then they are setting themselves up for disappointment.

Nothing is more demotivating to a student than not reaching their goals. And setting goals too high can cause this. Students should set a goal that they are able to work towards and have a good chance of achieving.

A time frame on a goal adds a sense of urgency that can motivate students to work harder towards their goal. But these time frames should be reasonable, not too long or too short.

Students need to be accountable for their goals. Having other people, such as friends and family, know about the goal can help students get the support they need to stay on track.

If students need help achieving their goal, they should ask for it. Their school often has many resources for help when students need it.

Because time and circumstances change, students should change their goals to match as well. This will come about through periodic assessments of their goals and making changes if needed.
