High School Students Holding Jobs

“High School Students Holding Jobs” Nearly thirty percent of all high school students are employed for some portion of their high school careers. The reasons for this vary. For some the job just provides spending money for their social life, and for others the income is vital for their families and to save for college. There are many pros and cons for high school students to hold jobs while learning.

There are many benefits to high schoolers holding jobs. It can teach students the relationship between education and salary. Many students work minimum wage and low income jobs. Seeing how little these jobs pay can encourage students to complete their education. Jobs also teach the value of money and budgeting. Without a job, students need to borrow money from other people, and this distances them from the value of the money. Students with a job learn the value of the dollar. Jobs also teach students to budget so that their hard earned money does not go to waste over frivolous things. Jobs also teach students to manage their time better, this helps avoid procrastination. It also helps them build confidence in things that they would otherwise have no experience with. Jobs also help students focus and stay out of trouble.

Although these benefits are great there are some downsides to working. Studies have shown that students that work over 20 hours a week don’t perform as well academically than students who do not. Most jobs that a high school student can get hired for don’t teach many or any skills that can help a student when they begin their real career. Students are also hired for more tedious jobs, and this can impact their view of work overall. Students who work may be discouraged to start their real careers after they graduate. Students need personal time and time with friends to help them build their mental health. Students often get jobs to earn money to use with friends, but this same job takes away from the time they spend socializing with friends or doing activities that they enjoy. Some students miss sleep in an attempt to fit in the time for school and work. This leads to fatigue which can not only impact academic performance, but also health and overall well being.

Should your student work in high school. That depends on the student and how many hours they plan to work. Be prepared to work with your student and help them maintain both their emotional well being and their academic success.
