How Students Can Prevent Burnout

How Students Can Prevent Burnout.  Every student has heard of burnout. Students who burnout because they load up on difficult classes hit an academic slump that it is difficult to recover from. Many students burnout and give up on their chosen career path and others have recovered from it and continue on their path, but those students might have anxiety of having another burnout that might affect their performance. Burnout affects not only just a semester’s worth of grades, but a student’s overall GPA and moral in terms of school. There are many factors that contribute to burnout. But some are more common and can be avoided with certain steps.

Many students want to take as many challenging courses as they can so that their course rigour looks good to colleges, but a student should take into account their other commitments, such as extracurricular activities and work, to reasonably assess how much time they have. Students who overload their plate with activities and course work are more likely to become burned out.

The types of courses can also affect burn out. Students who want to take rigorous courses should spread them out over their years in high school. Some students might want to start out only taking easy courses as freshmen and cram in their course rigour in Junior year. This leads to some years that are very easy and others being unnecessary hard and this does not prepare students for classes in college. Students should spread out their difficult courses over their 4 years to prevent unnecessary stress that can lead to burnout.

There are always factors affecting student stress outside of school. Family situations, monetary needs and other things. The stress from these can distract students from their course work and add to their stress which can lead to burnout. Students should be aware of this stress and explore options to help reduce it.

Students who have just come off of a good semester might be tempted to take a long break or not do as much work as they would have. But this could actually make the burnout worse. Students should relax when they need a break, but also keep their activities, such as volunteering, up in order to keep their mind stimulated.

Students should also continuously work on their grades and try hard. Their GPAs are hard to get back up and easy to drop, and by keeping their work steady they can avoid the stress that comes with seeing a GPA drop and avoid burning themselves out when they try to recover those grades.
