“How To Approach Online Final Exams” Because of the spread of COVID-19 high schools face the challenge of giving school online. As final exams approach many high schools have decided to simply not give those exams. While others have been forced to adapt to the new normal.
Students are forced to adapt to the new normal as well. Paper exams were most common before the pandemic but now most exams will be online. Because of this many students ask themselves if they should alter their study habits based on this new format. This answer depends, but if the student is not tech savvy or is not comfortable with the online format then these students should consider adopting new strategies.
Many factors may affect a student’s exposure to technology. And those with little exposure might not be comfortable with the online format. This is especially true with students who are slow typers. Have your student ask a knowledgeable friend for help or ask the school for resources that they can practice on to make them feel more comfortable with the format. Have them practice a little bit each day so that their skills are ready by exam time.
For many students this will be one of the first times they have taken an online exam. Have them take practice tests and get familiar with how the exams work. This will reduce stress when final exams crop up, and will help them do better because they feel more comfortable.
Students who should not alter their study habits are those that are comfortable with computers and those who have taken online exams before.
Many students have grown up with computers or even what to pursue a career in them. These students may even prefer the online format. Because of this familiarity these students should not alter their study habits because of the new online format.
Students should only change their study habits if a final exam is being presented in a new form. If the final is multiple choice or free response, chances are the format is familiar to most students who have taken online exams before. However, if the final includes a format that your student has not seen before, such as graphing or submitting coding, it would be a good idea for your student to practice beforehand so that they don’t put any more pressure on themselves. It is always a good idea to have a backup plan should technical issues arise. Have your student talk to their teacher about how to report issues if needed.
Online finals may be scary to many students, but with the right preparation students can effectively demonstrate their learning to their teachers.
