Motivate Yourself To Study. Tips For Getting Started And Building Study Momentum

Motivate yourself to study?  It can be accomplished!!  For many students, the sheer amount of work that needs to be done is daunting and can make them feel unmotivated. It can even make them doubt themselves, which interferes with motivation. But changes in a student’s thinking can help motivate them to continue.

Have the student acknowledge their difficulty and feelings that lead to them not being motivated. The first step to solving any problem is to acknowledge that there is one and then make a plan from there.

Encourage the student not to run away from difficult things in school. This can make them feel deflated and is more emotionally draining then just facing the work head on and getting it done.

Don’t have your student beat themselves up about procrastinating occasionally. Sure this is not a good habit to get into, but students can work on this habit in a healthy way instead of bulling themselves into working.

Have the students seek to understand their studying style better. This will make studying less unpleasant if the student can understand what makes them learn better. And, since all people avoid things that they don’t like doing, this can help them to become motivated to study.

There is always going to be someone better than you. Don’t let your students compare themselves to others. This will just discourage them.

Sometimes the hardest part of studying is starting. Have your students push themselves to just start, even if it is just for a couple of minutes. This will help them get over the initial obstacle and make it easier for them to take off on their own.

Have them focus on one task at a time. Most people can’t multitask effectively. So have them focus on one thing before moving onto another.

Make your student communicate with you about their goals and difficulties. This can help them commit to their goals and help you give them tips and tricks to help them achieve their goals.

Time limits can be stressful for students, especially if they feel like they don’t have enough time to complete everything. Have them switch their thinking from “Can I complete everything?” to something more like: “What can I complete in this amount of time.” This approach sets goals and a student is less likely to get overwhelmed.

Have the student realize that the work to get good grades is not going to be easy, but, instead, have them focus on the outcome and them achieving their goals. This will keep them motivated through the tough spots.
