Bennefits of Extracirriculars. High school students especially are told that they need to participate in at least one extracurricular activity. Many students and parents wonder if these activities really do the students any good. Extracurricular activities help students explore their interests and learn about themselves. They also help students meet new people and show potinatal colleges more about who the student really is.
Extracurricular activities are defined as any activity, whether it be a club, sport, or volunteer opportunity, that does not give a student school credit. These activities boost a student’s college application by highlighting the student’s interests, skills, and community involvement. These activities do not have to be sponsored by the school either. Students can go to their local Co-op or religious organization to highlight their unique interests.
Many students and parents don’t even know where to start getting involved, but the first place to look in a student’s high school. Many high schools give students many opportunities to display talents and interests. Clubs are also a great way to get involved. Many clubs focus on a subject or activity, but others, like sports, lets a student demonstrate many skills.
Work is also a type of extracurricular activity. This, while letting students get paid, also demonstrates a student’s dedication, time management, and responsibility to colleges and future employers.
Volunteering also shows colleges how a student can give back to the community. This can be through a religious organization or a nonprofit.
As with everything, balance between a student’s extracurriculars and school life is critical. Students should not commit to lots of hours of activity early. They should start slowly. Students should also plan their week ahead of time to avoid conflict. Lastly, students should use their time wisely. This includes using down time at work to study and managing their time effectively.
Extracurricular activities are important for a college to get to know an applicant beyond their grades or test score. Extracurriculars let a college know what a student is passionate about and lets them know that the student has good time management skills.
There are several activities that a student might be able to get started in right away. These include giving money or time to a local Co-op, or visiting a senior citizen home to play games or perform music. These are great ways to give back to the community and help a student beef up their college application.
While many students may want to get involved in as many activities as they can, it is important for students to find activities that they enjoy doing and not just to boost a college application. By doing so, they will reap the bennefits of extracirriculars.
