Teaching With Social Media. Today’s students are more well connected than ever before. With the vast number of social media platforms to choose from it is hard for students to not have at least one account on one platform, but teachers have been slow to integrate social media into their teaching.
Many adults such as parents and teachers are hesitant to introduce social media into the classroom because they think it would distract the students rather than help them learn, but this has been shown to be inaccurate. For many teachers and parents who are willing to take the next steps and integrate social media into their students’ lives, there are two questions that need answering. How to integrate social media into the classroom effectively, and how to ensure that the students are being good digital citizens.
Social media is a great way for teachers to connect with students and showcase classroom activities to the parents of students, who are also on social media. There are several things in the classroom that social media is a great platform for.
All students like recognition from their teachers and parents for good work. Social media is a great place for showcasing student work, with permission of course, and to acknowledge student awards. It is also a great place to get information to parents about special awards and programs.
Since most students spend much of their time online, social media is a great place to connect their learning in the classroom to relevant topics in the real world. This can come in the for of articles or blog posts that are relevant to the student’s curriculum.
Social media is a great way to form connections. Platforms can be used to connect with parents or connect struggling students with outside the classroom to help them learn the material.
Students need to learn how to be responsible digital citizens. And the best way to build those skills is to learn under a knowledgeable teacher’s guidance.
If a teacher is integrating social media into the classroom the most important part is being clear with the students about their expectations and what social media is used for in the classroom. Social media in the classroom needs to be structured to prevent abuse.
Teachers also need to monitor assignments or discussions on social media to prevent cheating or abuse. Many social media websites have tools to help with that and teachers make use of those tools.
Social media is a part of most student’s lives. With the right approach it can make classroom learning more fun and relevant to the students.
