“Breaking Bad Academic Habits” Many students recognize that they have a bad habit and know that they need to stop it. Bad habits are a repeated behavior that usually has a negative outcome. Bad habits that students might have can include procrastination or not sleeping enough. Studies show that many students know that they have a bad habit, but most do not understand the relationship between habits and how to break them.
Getting rid of bad habits is not an easy task. It takes on average 66 days to form a new habit, but this can vary. The process might seem long but any broken bad habit leads to an increase in quality of life. There are several ways for students to identify and break bad habits.
Students with bad habits might be tempted to try and start breaking it right away. But this might actually have the opposite effect. A student should take time to gather information about what triggers the bad habit rather than try to break it without all the information.
Now that the student is trying to break the bad habit it is good to try to take it small steps at a time. For example, if a student is trying to spend less time on their phone before bed it would be best for them to slowly lower the amount of time they spend rather than just quit outright.
A student should also replace the negative behavior with a positive one rather than just doing nothing. For example, if a student is trying to spend less time on their phone when they are bored, they should instead have a plan to read or do something else in that time rather than do nothing.
Environment can also play a huge part in bad habits. Some students may find that they are more likely to procrastinate if they are in their room. A student should be aware of these factors and make the appropriate adjustments in order to avoid temptation. If students find themselves procrastinating if they are in their room, studying at the library could be a big help.
No students should have to go through breaking bad habits alone. Many people have bad habits they want to change. Students may find that having an accountability partner to keep them in check and cheer them on is a huge help.
Students may become discouraged if they slip up and revert back to their bad habit. It is important for them to understand that these are normal and to learn from them instead of just giving up.
Breaking bad habits is a long and difficult process, but, with the right tools and mindset, students improve their quality of life and grades significantly.
