How to have digital learning success during covid-19. Having students at home and online this school year is a big adjustment for most parents. However, there are some things that you can do to maximize the student’s online learning time.
A student needs a good place to work in order to learn effectively. Instead of letting them take classes and do work in bed, provide them desk space. This helps them focus and get into the routine of learning.
Many students are missing the socialization aspect of school. Whether that be talking to friends or having large group discussions in class. To help alleviate this, study groups are a good idea. These can be socially distanced in the front yard or through Facetime or Skype. These will not only help with studying but also help with the loneliness a student might be feeling.
Screen time has gone up significantly since all the students’ classes are now online. Have your student take a break from the screen as often as they can. Print out assignments and have them read real books so that everything is not on a screen.
Phones, and all the social media and text alerts it provides, are distracting and can cause a student to lose focus. Have the student turn off their phone and only check it at certain times of the day. This makes sure that they are focused during their classes.
Keeping track of your students schedule is important to making sure that you, as the parent, are not interrupting them during class time. Make a schedule at the beginning of the week and designate quiet time for your student.
Getting new back to school outfits will encourage a student to get up and out of pajamas. This helps students that are routine oriented get focused for the day.
Make your student a snack stash to keep with them at their desk to help avoid distractions from learning that come with hunger.
Encourage the student to find spaces for both educational and relaxing activities away from the computer screen.
According to research, students study better in day-lit areas with fresh air. Finding them a good study spot that meets those criteria will help a student study more effectively.
Keeping a positive attitude each morning will influence your student and model good attitudes for them to carry into their day.
Things are bound to get loud and hectic, especially if you have more than one student in the house. Encourage your student to buy headphones. This will help them concentrate and tune out other noise.
Especially at home, school and school work can feel endness. Keep a checklist with what the student needs to complete each day and have them check it off items when they complete them.
Some students may prefer to study in open spaces. To help them have some privacy making or buying dividers would help create a good study space.
Homes are filled with loud and distracting noise, from loud pets to bustling activity. Try to minimize as much as possible.
Exercise helps relieve stress and improve mood so encourage kids to relax and exercise after class.
Most importantly it’s ok to not have all the answers, just enjoy the time learning beside your student and try to help them develop effective study habits and places at home.
