Future Learning Skills Kids Will Need

“Future Learning Skills Kids Will Need” The news today spends a huge amount of time focusing on people investing in STEM fields. This focus can leave students thinking that they need to be good in a science, technology, engineering, or math class and can get discouraged when they don’t succeed. But there is a set of skills that every student needs to learn to be successful regardless of what field they go into. Processing these skill sets puts students far ahead of their peers. These skills can be incorporated into a student’s homework or lessons in the classroom.

All students must be able to think critically in this high speed world. They must be able to solve problems in new or creative ways. This can be done by turning questions and confusions on school work and beyond into projects that students find out the answer to on their own. Then teachers or parents can ask them to explain what they learned in their own words.

Students who wish to be successful in companies must be able to work collaboratively with peers towards a common goal. This is why a classroom project is such a common activity in school. This often frustrating activity teaches students key skills such as self-control, diplomacy, empathy, and time management. These are paramount to a student’s success outside the classroom.

Students are naturally tech-savvy due to them being raised on electronics. But this does not mean that they can use social media appropriately and discern fact from fiction. It is a good idea to encourage your student to read news articles from a trusted source or learn a new skill to supplement all the input from social media. It is always good for students to have a healthy amount of skepticism.

The ability to visualize where objects fit in space is called spatial awareness and many career fields from architect to designer rely on this skill set. Unfortunately it is rarely taught in school. But students can learn these skills by playing video games or riding in the car without GPS to visualize the distance between two points.

Students need to be able to communicate clearly to be successful. This can be developed with fun games between their friends or simply having conversations at the dinner table.

Creativity is a skill that many future employers look for. This is a skill that is important regardless of what career your student pursues. To help build this it is important for students to have the thought process of identifying the problem then planning and executing the solution.

Students need to build their skill sets for the career world, and these activities can help them obtain the tools to do just that.
