How To Engage Your Online Students

“How To Engage Your Online Students”  The transition from in-person to online instruction very quickly has left many students and teachers unprepared. But there is a way that teachers and students can learn the new online format and excel.

It is very important to build a community, especially online because students might feel isolated. An informal and relaxed tone can help with this. Once a teacher has established a tone this will guide the rest of the class from how turning in assignments look, to what participation is like. Students should learn what the tone is and how this affects the class.

Teachers face the challenge of keeping students engaged in an online course, which many students tune out. They will most likely do this by making the class discussion based, interacting with the students every 15 minutes. Teachers may interact with the students through the video or audio or give them polls to make sure they are understanding the material. They may also use the chat feature to answer questions and have students respond to questions. Students should be understanding if things go wrong, because online classes are not perfect.

Teachers will often be more expressive to keep students entertained. They will also set high expectations for the students in order to keep the engaged and help them to rise and meet the challenge. They might also inject a discussion about the material every 15 minutes, and students should participate in those. Some teachers might also use polls to see what students think about a discussion. Most importantly teachers will try to engage a range of students just like they would do in regular class.

Most online platforms offer a break out room feature, and these are great online substitutes to small group discussion. The ideal size is 4 to 7 students and the teacher might also sit in on groups to facilitate the discussion and see if the students have any questions.

It is common knowledge that some students are reluctant to speak up in class, and these students can disappear in an online class. But online participation is important. Encourage students to turn on their cameras and express to them why participation is important. Some teachers might also assign a grade to class participation, or might assign group work to the students to get all students to participate.

Many people feel isolated because of the online platform, and teachers are doing their best to help build a community among students. If a student feels a community in class they are more likely to engage and do better in the class.
