Increase Classroom Participation Of Shy Students

“Increase Classroom Participation Of Shy Students” Many students find the act of speaking up in class as terrifying. Teachers also find it difficult to encourage students to speak up in class, especially when the student who won’t speak up has creative insight and has genuine questions. These strengths are often only revealed when the teacher is working with the student one on one. Many teachers try to combat this problem by putting students on the spot, but this often has the opposite effect and can traumatize a student and most likely won’t achieve the outcome of getting a student’s insight into a conversation. There are several tricks teachers and parents can use to help their students feel more comfortable speaking up in class.

Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing wrong with students that are introverted, but it is important for students to learn skills that help them feel comfortable sharing. This first thing is to make a space where students feel comfortable sharing. Today’s world tends to favor extroverts, so it is not easy to be a passive observer and do well. So students who are more introverted access the classroom environment to see if they feel like it’s a safe place to share their thoughts. The best way for teachers and parents to get students to participate is to clearly set a classroom environment and the standard for participation as favoring students who simply try their best.

Teachers and parents may try small group discussions in class. This allows students to get more talking done with less competition among the larger class. This will also help introverted students feel more secure in sharing their thoughts in front of a smaller group. This is also good training for them to get comfortable sharing in a larger group.

Teachers and parents should be observant. The shyer students are often more comfortable around one student. This student can be paired with the shyer one as a way to build their confidence and prepare for what they are going to share with the whole class.

Teachers will often schedule times for students to present in front of the class in order to avoid putting kids on the spot. Shyer students should use this time to get more comfortable with what they are going to say so that they can be more confident to share their thoughts in front of the whole class. Communicating thoughts is part of a student’s learning experience, and with a few changes quieter students can be more active in participating in class.
