“Key Reasons Students Should Read” Some students question what pouring a lot of time into reading complete novels, whether for fun or for school, will do for them in the long run. Studies have shown that reading regularly does quite a lot for a student’s brain and skill sets needed for school work.
Regular reading exposes students to different writing styles, and also more vocabulary that they might not have seen before. This is especially good for standardized tests, which utilize vocabulary that most students have never seen before. Reading also exposes students to proper grammar that will help them the next time they have to write a paper or essay. The student also develops skills to deduce the meaning of words from context clues in the novel. This boosts their critical thinking skills.
Fiction books especially boost creativity. While this usually happens at a younger age, It is an important skill to develop for high school students. High school students need to be able to think outside the box for college and their future careers.
The exposure to different vocabulary and writing styles also has another benefit of improving students’ writing skills. The boost in creativity also helps students write better papers as well. While being exposed to different writing styles, students subconsciously began to adopt different writing styles that they like and this makes them better writers.
Reading exercises the brain. This mental workout helps students think critically and retain information more quickly. Students that are able to retain information more quickly will be more efficient when studying because it takes them less time to retain the same information as their non-reading peers. The boost in critical thinking also helps students who read spot patterns quicker. This will help them on tests where these students can eliminate wrong answers and spot potentially useful information in reading passages.
Memory and reading are closely linked. Regular reading helps students train their brains to remember important information. Readers need to remember characters, plots, important themes, and specific details while they are reading. This quick memory will help students remember specific details and important information as the teacher is talking. This will help them later when they take assessments that require them to recall information on the spot.
All students should be reading. It is a large investment in time and energy, but the rewards of better vocabulary, boosted creativity, improved writing, critical thinking skills, and improved memory make reading a good book an investment worth the time.
