Reading Comprehension For College Students

Reading Comprehension For College Students. Some students struggle in college with basic reading comprehension, such as determining cause and effect, or making inferences. This is because in high school these students do little actual reading, instead they rely on class discussions to pass quizzes and tests. This strategy does not work in college. Students who struggle with this can try a few active reading strategies that will help bolster their reading comprehension and get it ready for the college level.

Environment is important for students. Students should find a quiet area with little distractions and enough lighting to be comfortable. This spot should also be convenient for students to get to all the things they need.

It is always easier for students to grasp what they are reading if they have context to put the book in. Students should find out about the author, the period the book is being written in, and the topic the book is covering before they even start. Students can also learn a lot from a glossary or introduction.

Students who are not used to reading dense books or textbooks may feel overwhelmed. It is important for them to break up their reading and take regular breaks so that they can digest the material. It is also important for students to give themselves regular tests to see if they understood what they are reading. If they didn’t, students should reread the paragraph.

Students should watch for important words or ideas as they are reading. If they are comfortable using a highlighter then highlighting the text is a good idea, but students should not get carried away. If they do not want to highlight, then they should take notes in the margins or a notebook about the important points.

Students should also take notes on the main points. This is different from highlighting because it is a student’s own notebook. They should take notes in their own style that makes sense to them. If they are reading a textbook it may help to summarize each paragraph to check for understanding.

Students can ask questions about comprehension before they start reading. This will help focus them as they read for the answer.

Students may not know all the words they encounter. If they come across a word they are unfamiliar with they should look it up online to help with understanding.

Students learn better if they can make connections to the information they are learning and what they already know. Have them think about those connections as they read.

After they are finished reading, students should summarize the text in their own words. This helps them understand what they have learned better.

Students can also discuss what they have learned with the teacher or classmate. This will help improve their memory of the content.

Good reading skills are important for student’s success in college, and these can be built but using good active reading strategies.
