Tips To Help Students Stay Focused During Online Schooling? Because of the distance that the schools must teach the students at parents are being called on more and more to be involved in their student’s learning. This is especially true for those kids with learning disabilities. Engagement is used to refer to the amount of quality time a student spends with learning at a distance. This can be on a zoom with a teacher or on their own time. Because many students have not been online in this way before, being engaged is harder for students. Without support from parents or teachers many students can get frustrated so helping your student engage is important to their learning experience.
Understanding the expectation of distance learning can help parents set up a reasonable schedule for their students. Many older students can handle more screen time than younger ones, but interaction is important for all ages.
Identify the types of distance learning activities that your student responds well to. These can be with a teacher on zoom or one on one with a parent. Either way identifying these can help parents make plans to help their students learn.
Students of all ages need exercise to maintain focus. So build in times for students to exercise. Some students might also respond well to standing while learning, so consider having them move to a place where they can stand.
When possible remove distractions that might negatively impact the student’s ability to focus. This can simply be clutter or it could be noises such as a TV or a phone. This can take the form of a designated workplace free from clutter.
A schedule is helpful, but always be ready to adjust when needed. This optimizes the time your student spends working. Have breaks scheduled when the student is most tired. And plan study time when the student is most engaged. Also focus on the topics that your student needs help with the most. THe easier ones that take less time can be postponed to a later day.
Checklists are very helpful for keeping students engaged. Have your student keep a checklist of what they need to do that day and mark off what they have done.
It is ok to take breaks. Most teachers designed instruction to be interesting or challenging, and neither parent nor teacher wants them to be frustrated. Students may think and process the information in down time and be better prepared for when they resume their learning.
By having many positive rewards for small achievements, students can keep themselves motivated. This can be something as small as a checkmark by a completed assignment or break time to watch a movie.
Distance learning might seem stressful or unproductive. But by helping your child stay engaged they can have a productive and meaningful year.
