“How To Choose The Best AP Class For You” For many students, the pressure to take as many AP, Advanced Placement, courses as the school offers is put on them each year when it is time to sign up for classes. Many desirable colleges want AP classes on a student’s transcript, but it is the quality rather than the quantity of AP courses that is really important. Choosing the right AP classes can be difficult and it is the key to a students exam score and college future. But there are ways to help a student pick the best AP class for them.
Since the ultimate goal of AP classes is to take the exam and get a high enough score to get college credit, a student should research the AP credit policy at their top choice colleges. Some colleges accept 3s and higher for some courses while others do not accept AP courses at all. If a student’s top choice for college does not accept a particular AP class then why take it? Whereas if a college accepts 3s and above for another AP class that the student is interested in taking it would be worth it for the student to take the class since there is a high likelihood that they will get college credit.
Taking AP classes with similar content shows the college that the student has a certain level of expertise in that area. For example, if a student takes english and foreign language AP classes, the college will see that this student is strong in language skills. Whereas if a student takes all math AP classes the college will see that the student is strong in math. This could be used to show the college that the student is interested in a particular major or it could be used to show that the student is well rounded academically. Either way, picking AP classes that are in the same family sends a powerful message to the college.
While it is impressive to colleges to see a large number of AP classes, it is even more impressive for them to see a student doing well in those classes. For students, it is easier to excel in AP classes that play to their natural strengths. When choosing AP classes, have the students look at the classes they did well in the last year. If they excelled in pre-calculus, then AP Calculus AB or BC would be a logical next step.
AP classes are important for high school students to challenge them academically, but choosing the right AP classes is better for college credit and student health in the long run.
