How Students Can Create Exponential Learning

How Students Can Create Exponential Learning.  Ongoing research in cognitive science continues to reveal how students learn. Many teachers use this information to guide classroom instruction by considering what prior knowledge students bring to the classroom, making learning environments that allow for students to retain knowledge, by having their students reflect on their learning, and transfer that learning onto other situations outside and in the classroom.

Students, especially older high school students have educational experience and personal stories that all impact their learning experience. All of their prior experience, research indicates, directly affects how they respond to teaching and learn the information in the class. Teachers may assess this knowledge and use this information to better allow for their students to learn the material.

Teachers might encourage metacognition in the classroom. Metacognition is where students reflect on their personal habits, knowledge, and styles of learning. This is valued in education because it encourages students to self-regulate with their learning as well as transferring skills they have learned to other concepts through reflection and abstract concepts.

Many students may report their ‘learning style’, this refers to their thoughts on how they learn best through one of the three commonly accepted ways. Many researchers dispute this style of thinking about learning and point to other ways that students learn. A teacher may adopt many ways to suit their students’ needs.

Many years of research has proven the idea that students learn best in social classroom environments. Social activities help students work together and helps them understand the concepts better by recognizing misunderstandings and practicing communication skills.

Students learn best when they can connect their newly learned knowledge to their prior knowledge. This is also very effective in social classrooms where students can communicate with other students. This develops understanding through varied approaches. Teachers can also help students build their knowledge of concepts through connections to other concepts and ideas.

Transfer refers to the idea that a student’s mastery of one skill or concept enables them to apply their skill in a different context. This is considered by many to be the mark where a student has truly learned the material. Research suggests that in order to reach this point students must be exposed to the material in a variety of different ways. This will allow the student to reach the point in their intellectual maturity that they can apply their knowledge to different concepts in their life or learning.
