Language Learning Strategies For Students. Learning a new language, especially in school is a time intensive and sometimes daunting task. But there are things that a student can do to make the learning easier.
Learning a new language has three parts that a student struggling in their language class can implement. This includes input of the language, which is listening and reading. Output, which is when the students themselves speak or write. And looking for errors and feedback. A student studying a language should apply all three to their study plan.
It is easy for students to access materials for the input of their language learning. Written and oral sources are readily available. But if they focus on only one aspect of their language then their learning will fall behind. It is important that their study plan in their language courses includes all three parts equally.
Many students in foreign language classes are scared to focus on the output of language because they are afraid to make a mistake. This negatively impacts their learning. Instead they should realize that making mistakes is important and that they should strive to practice, not be perfect.
Research has suggested that it is more effective to study in small increments spread out over a long period of time. This way the student is not cramming at the last minute.
Learning a new language involves a lot of memorizing. Some students are not strong in this skills, but if they can use a technique that they know already works for them they can improve their memory and learn new words effectively.
Although grammar is important, a student needs to put more time into learning vocab. An increased vocabulary helps students communicate in their new language better, and also helps their understanding.
A student seeking to increase their knowledge in a forgin language can do many things to help them become immersed in that language. The best way to have input of the language is too look to real sources, such as TV and books in that language. This is often more interesting than reading the textbook. Students should also pay attention to words in that language spoken in their surroundings and record new and interesting vocab to study later.
Most importantly, students should adapt their language learning to what they think is fun. Have them think about what got them interested in the first place and adapt study strategies to that original motivation. Students are much more likely to put time into learning if they think it is fun.
